In the 1940s and 1950s, it was not unusual for more thanone million people to hit the beach at Coney Island on a hot summer day. After the sun and surf, many would then visit the Parachute Jump and Steeplechase Park, which stand in the background. This photo was taken by Allyn Baum, a staff photographer for The New York Times from 1957 to 1967. He also contributed articles on
